‘No way’ a dentist could make more than $80K with the salary at the top
Posted February 15, 2019 12:06:31A dentist who made a fortune by prescribing the highest-priced drugs for $1,200 per dose and treating his patients for up to 12 years earns $80,000 per year, according to the latest US salary data.
A spokesperson for the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) told News24 the figure was incorrect, as it does not include health insurance, which the BLS does not collect.
“It does not reflect dental insurance rates for full-time dentists,” said BLS spokesperson Jennifer Larkin.
“The BLS has not been able to confirm whether the dental insurance rate in the US is a percentage of a full- or part-time dentist’s salary.”
Ms Larkin said the US salary figures were a rough guide to the median salary for a dentist, who is typically paid $60,000.
But the BMS did not confirm how much it would be worth to a dentist if they worked full- time.
“We don’t have data on this yet,” Ms Larkin told News 24.
“But we do know that most dentists in the United States work at least 30 hours per week, and that in the past few years, the median annual salary for dentists has been about $80k.”
Ms Mowat said the figures were based on the latest salary data released by the US Government in January, but that the US government would be releasing a more detailed salary survey later this year.
“A person who works a full time job, but doesn’t have dental insurance can earn over $100,000,” she said.
“There’s a lot of uncertainty around what is a dentist’s full-year salary.”
